3.4 billion people unreached. Not because the church failed — but because the world’s population exploded. God saw it coming. And right now, He is actively raising up the leaders to meet it.

There is a strip of the earth — running from West Africa through the Middle East and deep into Asia — where the name of Jesus is largely unknown. Missiologists call it the 10/40 Window, named for the latitudes that define its borders. It is home to more than 3.4 billion people who have never encountered the Gospel in a meaningful way.

Not people who heard and walked away. People who have never had the chance.

That number can feel paralyzing — even accusatory. Has the church simply failed? Have two thousand years of missionary effort not succeeded? The answer, when you look at what’s actually happened, is a clear and surprising no.

The Real Reason: A World That Doubled Overnight

In 1970, the total human population of the earth was around 4 billion people. Today it stands at more than 8 billion. In roughly fifty years, humanity doubled. That is one of the most staggering demographic events in all of recorded history — and it happened faster than any missionary movement could naturally keep pace with.

The 10/40 Window absorbed much of that growth. Birthrates in North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia surged. Cities swelled. Entire generations were born into communities where the Gospel had never taken root — not because anyone had tried and failed to reach them, but simply because the world grew faster than the reach of the church.

WORLD POPULATION GROWTH

1970 — 4 billion
Today — 8.4 billion

The world doubled in 50 years — much of that growth concentrated in the 10/40 Window.

This isn’t a story of the church sleeping on the job. It’s a story of a world that grew at an unprecedented rate — and a God who was not caught off guard by any of it.

God’s Providence — Still Unfolding

Before the population surge began, God already knew what was coming. And right now — actively, purposefully — He is reaching into the 10/40 Window and calling out indigenous leaders within these cultures, these languages, these communities. He is equipping them and their teams to reach their own people in ways no outsider ever could. This work has begun. But it is only just beginning. Less than 30 years in the making.

A Movement in Its Infancy — And That’s the Point

Here is something that should both humble and energize us: the indigenous leader movement inside the 10/40 Window is not a finished work. It is not even close. By our best estimates, approximately 2,000 called indigenous leaders are actively engaged in disciple-making and church-planting within this region today.

Two thousand leaders. 3.4 billion unreached people. The math makes the need unmistakable.

But that’s not a reason for despair — it’s a reason for urgency. Because God is not done calling. He is actively drawing more leaders out of these communities, raising up more teams, multiplying more movements. We are not witnessing the tail end of something. We are witnessing a new chapter, the very first chapter of what God intends to do across the 10/40 Window.

WHERE THE MOVEMENT STANDS TODAY
Indigenous leaders currently called and active in the 10/40 Window — a powerful start, and the foundation for a movement that God is still building. Thousands more are being called. The work is just beginning.

This is what makes now such a critical moment. The foundation is being laid. The early leaders are proving the model works — one disciple making another, movements multiplying from the inside out, the Gospel spreading through communities in ways that no outside mission strategy could replicate. But the scale of the need demands far more. And God is answering that need, one called leader at a time.

“As God’s grace reaches more and more people, there will be great thanksgiving, and God will receive more and more glory.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:15

More Than Compassion — This Is About Worship

The driving force behind all of this isn’t simply our compassion for the unreached — though we should care deeply. At its core, the Great Commission is about the glory of God. The goal is that every nation, every tribe, every tongue joins in the worship of Him.

Right now, entire people groups exist who have never sung Jesus’ name. Never prayed to Him. Missions fills that silence. Every church planted, every disciple made in the 10/40 Window is a new voice added to the eternal chorus rising to God. Love sets it all in motion; the worship of God among every nation is the destination.

The Window Is Open. Will We Step Through It?

The population of the world isn’t shrinking. The need isn’t going away. But God is actively positioning His people inside the 10/40 Window to meet it — right now, in real time. The question is whether we will come alongside what He is doing — with prayer, with resources, with urgency — to fuel a movement that is only in its earliest stages.

The leaders are being called. The movements are taking root. The first chapter is being written. What they need now is for Christians to believe that God’s plan is working — and decide to be a part of it before the story gets much further along without us.

Join What God Is Actively Doing

  • Pray specifically. Ask God to call out more indigenous leaders from within the 10/40 Window — and to multiply the movements already taking root.
  • Give strategically. Equipping native-led leaders is the most effective path to Gospel growth in the 10/40 Window. Your investment multiplies from the inside out.
  • Spread the word. Most believers have never heard this story. Share it. Urgency grows when people understand what God is actively doing in the world right now.

The world doubled. God preceded it, purposed it, and is moving powerfully within it. His leaders are being called out. The movements are just beginning to multiply. And the church has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to come alongside the greatest missionary work of our time — while it is still in its infancy.

The window is open. Let’s go.
